We’re pretty excited about our next mix takeover as we celebrate the legendary imprint Night Slugs’ 15th anniversary! Founded by Alex Sushon (Bok Bok) and James Connolly (L-Vis 1990), Night Slugs was initially launched as a club night series after Alex and James met on Myspace in 2008, expanding into a record label in 2010. From then, Night Slugs quickly became one of the distinctive dance music labels of the 2010s as they pushed a hybrid of grime, house, electro, R&B, hip hop and dubstep. With a lasting influence across the globe to this day, the label released career defining releases from the likes of Jam City, Girl Unit, Mosca, Jacques Greene, Lil Silva and more. To celebrate their 15th anniversary, Night Slugs have pulled together the ‘Classic Remixed’ compilation which fuses the label’s past, present and future with artists taking on remixes of the label’s classics. These remixers include Night Slugs family Ikonika, Helix, CalvoMusic & OSSX, as well as many of the labels peers and next-gen favourites including Grandmixxer, Bored Lord, MoMa Ready, Hagan, Karen Nyame KG, River Moon, DJ Polo & NKC, DJ Lag, scotti dee and more.
Kicking off the takeover is DJ Polo who credits the label as one of his biggest influences. The Bristol-based party starter first got into the rave scene when he was 18 and has since been championing his deep percussive sound in the West of England. Through the day party and collective Sprung he brought the likes of Hard House Banton, Supa D, Apple, T Williams, and Crazy Cousinz to Bristol and more recently through Club Djembe they’ve released the likes of Fiyahdred, Lobby, SAYE, Kaval and more. For his own productions, DJ Polo started releasing music in 2017, landing on labels such as More Time Records, Even The Strong, Livity Sound and has now remixed Bok Bok for the Classics Remixed compilation.
Speaking about the mix, DJ Polo says, “for this mix I wanted to draw on some of my favourite releases from the label across the years. The mix includes a lot of the earlier NS releases and music from around that era that was really inspiring me at that time, as well as some brand new music in the same vein.”
