Festival Spotlight: Field Maneuvers

Now into its sixth year, Field Maneuvers has built a reputation for being an anti-corporate festival that exudes the essence of the 90s free party movement. What else do you do when you’re in a market that is saturated with festivals that overbook their lineups and forget where the scene came from? With a 700 capacity and the location unknown, only to be revealed to revellers closer to the time, Field Maneuvers give the music aficionados what they want – a no fuss experience that puts all the attention on a carefully curated lineup with diversity. We’ve picked some of top artists to see at the festival which, takes place from the 31st August to 2nd September.

Eris Drew

Also known as High Priestess of the Motherbeat, Eris brings unique, otherworldly magic to her sets. A resident at Chicago’s Smart Bar and co-founder of Hugo Ball, the club’s long-running polysexual Dada-inspired dance party, Eris also gives lectures on electronic music history with a focus on marginalised voices for Daphne. Every mix that has graced the internet from the High Priestess has completely blown our minds as the alchemical relationship she has with her rave records shines through the highly rhythmic sets. Earlier this month, Shelter uploaded a Rinse FM podcast from Eris that we haven’t stopped thinking about since; it is cleverly spilt into four parts distinguishing between different BPMs, starting with 140+ hardcore and moving into the realms of 121, 133 and 125.

Jane Fitz

A resident of the legendary UK festival Freerotation, and now East London venue The Pickle Factory, Jane Fitz is one of London’s leading party figures, running Night Moves alongside Jade Seatle. Her genre-defying mixes makes her one of the most exciting DJs to see still 20 years on, blending together ambient, acid, deep house, progressive and psychedelic sounds. There’s always room for discovery when witnessing Jane Fitz play and as her DJing remains the focus, productions under the moniker Invisible Menders (co-produced with Dom Ahtuam) have appeared on labels such as Porn Wax and Boe.

Powder

An alluring DJ and producer, Powder first reached the European circuit with her ‘Highly’ EP released on ESP Institute. Having previously been confined to the scene in Tokyo, Powder begun working with Samo DJ after meeting in 2015 and has released a string of EPs on Born Free, the label Samo runs with Sling. Following the release of ‘H’ EP, Powder’s ecstatic blend of dance-floor bombs, acid-tinged melodies and dub sounds has captured global attention with a full flourishing international schedule locked in for the rest of the year including dates in London, Croatia, Amsterdam, Ukraine, Melbourne and Morocco.

Dr. Rubinstein

After moving to Berlin six years ago from Tel Aviv, Dr. Rubinstein quickly made a name for herself from her electrifying rave-positive sets. First being booked for //:about blank and a little later, Berghain the buzz around her sets led to international success. Still a dedicated raver to this day, Dr. Rubinstein has played some the most well respected clubs in the world and top festivals such as Dekmantel and Sonar and yet without any releases under her belt. Her powerful acid-driven sets are filled with mind-melting twist and turns that leave you questioning what you had just experienced.

Iona

Known as a Dance Tunnel and Dalston Superstore icon, iona has been killing the local circuit with dates at Rye Wax, The Yard and associated with promoters such as Feelings, Tesselate, Make Me and Suspiciously Delicious. Moving into bigger things this year, iona will be bringing her sultry sets to Kala’s debut festival in Albania and The Tower festival in Leeds.
